Definte Impellor fallen off problem

Same happened to me on 52 plate TDI

For Frauds to do it, means new waterpump, new cambelt (as cambelt has to come off to change pump) and a bill of around

Not really a nightmare, so long as you have a reasonable tool kit, and engine locking kit and a trolley jack. It will take a fair time due to the number of pieces you have to remove, but you will find that most parts are accessible and come off fairly easily. Re-assembly takes a little longer due to having to adjust the cambelt tensioner.

Not too bad a price to pay... if your belt change interval is looming. I had mine done FOC recently under warranty, just 4000 miles short of the belt interval.

And yes I got the 'cambelt replacement stamped into the back of the service book.

Is there a bit of a stink coming from the engine compartment by the way?

If you can turn the impeller while the external pulley is still, it is indeed......kernacked.

Not sure if this is the same problem as my Diesel Galaxy, on high speeds and up hills the temperature gauge rises and only comes down if I lift off the throttle or slow down. Also the heater temperature is fairly cold unless the temperature gauge is near the red!

I don't know what to check or change, perhaps check the impellor, water pump by the looks of this or perhaps thermostat?

Hi

New here, just having the same problem as others, I have an Alhambra 1.9 tdi 110, so wondering how you got on. Problems as follows:

1. Temp gauge goes up after a run 60-70mph for 45 mins, sometimes to warning level

2. Apparent loss of water after most trips (e.g. 2.5 pints after 50 miles@60mph in two trips or half a pint after a local trip)

3. No significant smoke/steam from exhaust

4. No mayo on oil filler cap.

5. No apparent leaks in radiator or hoses

6. System appears to relieve lots of pressure (sound of water draining to bottom of system) when header tank cap is released.

7. Fan seems to kick in as it should.

8. Heater works, but have a feeling it may only work when turned to max

I'm inclined to think it's a head gasket problem but nothing seems to stack up and don't want to take it to a garage and get roped into replacing radiator, water pump, thermostat and hoses before realising what the real problem is. In addition, have just realised the head gasket was replaced in April last year - could this have failed already?

If anyone can shed some light on this (along with some potential costs) it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Neil

Guys, the general consensus on this is that the water pump impellor separates from the shaft, it is impossible to detect other than by physically removing the water pump and inspecting it.

It is a known and widely reported issue. A new pattern water pump with a metal impellor provides a permanent fix.

I would like to pick up this thread since I have seen exactly the same symptoms as originally described. The only thing to add is that mine will boil the water away. Even when it doesn't boil away there was real pressure in the cooling system. I don't know if that is normal. So far, I have had the water pump, thermostat and radiator replaced as well as had a "chemical" test done to check for a blown head gasket which came back negative. But, I still have the problem. Am now I am wondering of the only possible cause now must be the head gasket.

Can anyone help......please? 99 MkI TDi 110
